GUIDE TO PURSUING A CAREER AS AN AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE ENGINEER IN INDIA

There is a long history of aircraft accidents that have occurred due to mechanical malfunctions. As the aviation industry continues to expand in India, the importance of aircraft maintenance has become more significant than ever before. Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Eligibility Criteria

  • To be eligible, candidates must have passed the 10+2 board exam with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM), or hold an AICTE-approved 3-year engineering diploma in any stream with a minimum aggregate of 45% marks.
  • The candidate's age at the time of admission must fall between 16 and 28 years.
  • Candidates must not have any physical disabilities or color blindness that could potentially affect their work.
  • Candidates must pass the AME CET (Common Entrance Test) examination to qualify for the program.
  • Those who are eligible for a B.Tech degree in any stream may also pursue AME courses.

After passing the entrance exam, candidates must undergo a counseling process to secure admission to DGCA-approved institutes based on their ranks. The course is four years long, with two years dedicated to academic programs and the remaining two years for live training. Upon completion of the program, DGCA issues an AME license to the candidate, which is mandatory to become an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.

Categories in which a candidate can get AME License:

Category A: This license allows you to perform aircraft maintenance within certain limits. With an "A" license, you can work as a technician. The program is two years long, with the first year consisting of academic coursework and the second year dedicated to training in aircraft maintenance and repair.

Category A is sub-divided into 04 parts:-

A1: License for limited maintenance work on jet engine-based airplanes.
A2: License for limited maintenance work on piston engine-based airplanes.
A3: License for limited maintenance work on jet engine-based helicopters.
A4: License for limited maintenance work on piston engine-based helicopters.

Category B1: The mechanical stream in airplanes comes under the B1 license, which deals with engines, wings, and many other components

Category B1 is sub-divided into 04 parts

B1.1: License for maintenance of jet engine airplanes.
B1.2: License for maintenance of piston engine airplanes.
B1.3: License for maintenance of jet engine helicopters.
B1.4: License for maintenance of piston engine helicopters.

Category B2:- This license is related to the avionic stream and deals with maintaining and repairing electrical systems, instrumentation systems, navigation, and communication.

The AME license is a prerequisite for becoming an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer and can help you get maintenance jobs in both the private and public sectors, both in India and abroad.
